PointsBet teams up with NCPG on new responsible gambling research initiative
New operator-centric survey will examine how the industry will deal with an individual experiencing gambling-related harm

PointsBet has launched a new research initiative focusing on the decision-making process used by online gambling operators in partnership with the National Council on Problem Gambling (NCPG).
The initiative, which comprises a survey, aims to establish responses to a scenario where a fictitious online betting customer demonstrates potentially problematic gambling behavior.
The survey will showcase three fictional customers who are demonstrating potentially problematic gambling behavior, with those opting in being asked to take on the role of an operator and determine the best course of action for the customer based on the observed behavior.
Designed by PointsBet in collaboration with the NCPG, and the Massachusetts Council on Gaming and Health, the survey is entirely anonymous and voluntary and targets responses from the industry, government and clinical stakeholders.
It is due to be issued to attendees of National Conference on Gambling Addiction & Responsible Gambling 2022, taking place July 20-23.
PointsBet USA CEO Johnny Aitken highlighted the need to emphasize responsible gambling now, to ensure it has a “direct impact” on the future health of players and the sustainability of the industry.
“Navigating how to identify and address problem gambling is a complex and sensitive issue, and operators are regularly faced with how to best respond to customers who are exhibiting problematic gambling behavior,” Aitken said.
“Through this research project, we’re aiming to gain more insights on the thought process that goes into finding solutions for those impacted by problem gambling as well as better help inform operator decision making on this matter,” he added.
Findings and analysis of the survey will be made available to all conference attendees and the general public in September 2022.
Speaking about the need for regular review and evaluation of responses to problem gambling, NCPG executive director Keith Whyte welcomed the potential for the survey in this process.
“Our hope is that the results of this survey will spark dialogue amongst operators as well as regulators, treatment providers, researchers, and problem gambling advocates to help inform the responsible gambling decisions that online gambling operators face,” Whyte said.
