PENN hails in-house gains with Barstool Sportsbook migration completion
Operator transitions sportsbook and icasino to new stack across 16 US jurisdictions in “milestone achievement”

PENN Entertainment has confirmed the full migration of the Barstool Sportsbook & Casino to its in-house developed proprietary technology stack.
The migration, envisioned as part of PENN’s $388m acquisition of Barstool, which completed in February, is the final step in the transition of all PENN’s brands to in-house technology, a long-term objective of the business.
PENN temporarily shuttered the Barstool Sportsbook last week to complete the migration process, transitioning its existing accounts over during a 72-hour planned closure. The migration affects 16 jurisdictions in which the Barstool Sportsbook and casino currently operates.
Custom-built for the North American market, the vertically integrated technology stack aims to “increase platform stability” and is designed to be easily scalable across new markets while adapting to changes in regulation.
In tandem with the migration, PENN has revamped the Barstool Sportsbook and online casino with a number of strategic enhancements, including streamlined navigation and increased markets, as well as greater personalization and improved performance.
PENN’s Canada-facing sportsbook brand, theScore, completed its own migration onto the PENN stack in July 2022. The migration and revamp of Barstool will also see deepened integration with theScore’s media app, allowing users to build Barstool bets within theScore.
PENN Interactive president and COO Benjie Levy hailed the completion of the migration, drawing on the challenges involved in accompanying remarks.
“A technology migration of this scale requires an enormous amount of coordination and planning, and I’m extremely proud of our Interactive team who stepped up to the challenge to execute this complex project on time and with minimal disruption to customers,” Levy said.
“Deploying our technology infrastructure puts our experienced in-house team, who built the platform from the ground up, in full control of the end-to-end customer journey and all product development.
“With this proven technology powering a significantly enhanced Barstool Sportsbook, we are primed to deliver a world-class online sportsbook and casino experience to customers in the US,” he added.
The PENN Interactive president’s superior, PENN Entertainment CEO Jay Snowden, was similarly lavish in his praise of team members working on the migration, lauding the potential value add to the business.
“Migrating onto our proprietary technology platform and introducing a fully upgraded Barstool Sportsbook is a milestone achievement,” Snowden said.
“Having full control of our product and roadmap will lead to improved operational efficiency and the ability to quickly introduce new features, bespoke promotions, and wagering markets.
“I want to congratulate our Interactive team members who worked tirelessly to ensure a successful on schedule migration, which better positions us to compete in the online gaming space,” he added.
