Michigan regulator targets BetNow with cease-and-desist action
Offshore operator that allows deposits via cryptocurrency in the regulator’s crosshairs following January hit on MyBookie

The Michigan Gaming Control Board (MGCB) has handed down a cease-and-desist order to offshore operator BetNow for illegally offering sports betting and online casino in the state.
The BetNow.eu Sportsbook, Casino, and Racebook site was determined to host a range of casino games including slots, poker, and live dealer.
Sports betting and horse racing events were also made available on the platform, according to the state regulator.
Additionally, BetNow was ruled to have a range of payment options for users, including Apple Pay, debit and credit cards, and cryptocurrency.
However, the MGCB said players were required to wager their entire initial deposits before being able to withdraw any winnings.
The regulator added that following its investigation it had determined that the operator was in violation of several state laws, including the Lawful Internet Gaming Act and the Michigan Penal Code.
The firm has also breached the Michigan Gaming Control and Revenue Act in the eyes of the regulator, which can carry penalties of up to 10 years in prison, a fine up to $100,000, or both.
BetNow has 14 days to cease operating in Michigan, as per the cease-and-desist order.
“If the company fails to comply, the MGCB is prepared to work with the Michigan Attorney General’s Office to pursue legal action,” the MGCB added.
According to BetNow’s website, the operator is “licensed and regulated by the autonomous island of Anjouan.”
The operator’s site also claims the sportsbook’s odds have been seen or can be seen on ESPN, Fox Sports, and Forbes.
Henry Williams, MGCB executive director, said: “This unlicensed operator not only violates Michigan law, but also exposes consumers to significant risks.
“Our job is to protect Michigan residents by ensuring that all online gambling is conducted legally and responsibly.”
In January, the MGCB issued a cease-and-desist warning to Curaçao-based bookmaker MyBookie.ag.
