Alberta begins sports betting market with Super Bowl LVI weekend
Canadian province to offer single-event sports betting through PlayAlberta website

Sunday’s Super Bowl LVI in California between the Los Angeles Rams and the Cincinnati Bengals will be the first time that bettors in the Canadian province of Alberta will be able to legally bet on the conclusion of the National Football League (NFL) season.
The sole regulated igaming website available to Albertans, PlayAlberta.ca is offering a variety of markets such as the money line, spread and total points on the showpiece event.
The Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis Commission (AGLC) is mandated to ensure the province’s gaming industry is carefully managed to maximize the benefits to Albertans.
According to latest data from the AGLC, the LA Rams were the second most popular team to win the 2022 Super Bowl on PlayAlberta.ca back in the fall while the Bengals began the NFL season as 100/1 outsiders. The Rams are currently 4.5 points favourites on the spread at Alberta.ca.
AGLC president & CEO Kandice Machado welcomed the forthcoming launch as an important step for the province, with all profits being funnelled back into Albertan social causes.
“AGLC’s regulated gambling website was launched in September 2020 with the goal of providing legal-aged adults in the province an entertainment option in a safe environment,” Machado said.
When single-event sports wagering arrived on PlayAlberta.ca last fall, sports fans were given their own opportunity to ensure that money played in Alberta, stays in Alberta while supporting programs and services that people rely on every day,” she added.
PlayAlberta.ca offers players safe and secure deposits through Visa, Visa Debit, Mastercard and Mastercard Debit and has now expanded the deposit options to include Interac Online. The website is accessible to Albertans over 18 and physically located within the province’s border through browsers on desktop, smartphones and tablets.
Alberta is the first province to offer single-event sports betting following the Canadian government’s legalization of the vertical in August 2021.
