Weekend Review: Accumulators bite the dust as layers laud shock Premier League results
Leicester City and West Ham thrash favourites while 40/1 outsider lands the spoils at Newmarket
Punters were left perplexed after a Premier League weekend of acca-busting results gave the bookies the upper hand.
Leicester City’s 5-2 dismantling of Manchester City and West Ham’s surprise 4-0 victory over Wolves, plus Chelsea and Tottenham’s failure to win, saw the bookies rejoice after a difficult couple of weeks.
Kindred Group’s Ali Gill said bookmakers were pleased after the favourites “failed to deliver”.
Gill said: “A layers’ weekend this weekend in the Premier League as a number of favourites failed to deliver.
“Chelsea, Wolves, Manchester City and Spurs failed to record a win between them, leaving punters empty pocketed, and on top of that very few accas made it through with that many upsets,” he added.
Betway’s Chad Yeomans echoed Gill’s sentiment, with Sunday’s results acting as the jewel in the crown.
Yep, FOUR! 🤩
WHAT a performance from the lads 👏#WHUWOL

Yeomans said: “It was another good weekend for the book that started with Chelsea only earning a point at West Brom on Saturday, followed by a good set of results on Sunday.
“Newcastle’s draw away at Spurs, Leicester’s rout of Manchester City and West Ham’s superb performance to dismantle Wolves on Sunday were all good results for us,” he added.
Ladbrokes’ Alex Apati noted that Leicester’s trouncing of Pep Guardiola’s City side was backed by some punters.
“Leicester were, and always are, surprisingly well-backed against City. I think punters are put off the short price of City, I think they were around 3/10, certainly against a team like Leicester,” Apati said.

Manchester United’s 100th minute winner against Brighton, courtesy of a Bruno Fernandes penalty, ensured it wasn’t all doom and gloom for favourite-backers.
Gill said: “There was some reprieve for punters in the late goal department however, as Manchester United’s penalty brought joy to the majority of customers in that one.”
Betfred’s Alan Firkins added: “Oxygen in the trading department was required on Saturday after Manchester United’s late ‘Fergie-time’ VAR winner at Brighton. We were a standout for United to win and both teams to score.”

Elsewhere, in horseracing, 40/1 Majestic Dawn emerged victorious in the Cambridgeshire Handicap at Newmarket, in what marked a positive result for operators.
Yeomans said: “Big field handicaps can go either one of two ways, but thankfully a 40/1 winner in Majestic Dawn in the Cambridgeshire at Newmarket on Saturday capped a good day of racing HQ, where there was just one winning favourite in all seven races.”
Gill added: “At Newmarket on Saturday, the Cambridgeshire Handicap went to 40/1 shot Majestic Dawn who was fairly weak in the book with us, so with favourite Tempus out of the places, a good result for us there.”
