Swedish regulator warns operators off cashback schemes as bonus replacements
Spelinspektionen has commenced an investigation into a number of operators’ bonusing efforts

The Swedish gambling regulator (Spelinspektionen) has sent a letter to operators threatening to revoke the licences of those not adhering to its strict bonusing regulations.
Spelinspektionen said it has initiated an investigation into operators’ bonus offerings, although none are named directly.
According to Swedish news outlet Break it, No Account Casino operator Mandalorian Technologies had introduced a 10% refund scheme as a replacement for bonuses, despite new regulations dictating that licence holders can only offer one welcome bonus per player.
In the letter, the regulator warned operators they are at risk of being fined or losing their licence if they are found to be offering a cashback scheme or any other bonusing alternative.
“If the licence holder violates the rules, the authority can intervene with high penalties. The licence can also be revoked,” said a Spelinspektionen statement.
“Unauthorised bonus offers risk attracting players with problems maintaining their gambling in a way that can be considered unhealthy.”
Kindred’s Maria Casino introduced a similar refund scheme in Denmark in October in anticipation of new bonusing regulations to come in July.
