
Sweden’s gaming revenue up 5% in 2021
Covid-19 related-restrictions hampered turnover but yearly revenue tops pre-pandemic sales

Sweden’s 2021 gaming revenue increased 5% year-on-year during 2020 to SEK26bn (£2.5bn) despite Covid-19-related restrictions, according to the latest figures released by gambling authority Spelinspektionen.
This also represented an increase from 2019 of SEK24.8bn in total revenue.
Q4 2021 also saw a 2% year-on-year total gaming revenue increase to SEK7bn.
Online gaming and betting was the strongest vertical posting a yearly revenue of SEK16.1bn with Q4 representing SEK3.9bn of this total figure. Meanwhile, state lottery and slot machines represented SEK5.8bn in total for 2021.
After six months of being shuttered due to pandemic-related restrictions, Svenska Spel-owned Casino Cosmopol generated SEK277m over the second half of the year.
The regulator announced that around 70,000 people signed up to the self-exclusion tool, Spelpaus, during Q4 which is an increase of 5% on Q3.
Between July 2020 and November 2021, Swedish licensed operators were subject to a weekly SEK5,000 cap on deposit limits and an SEK100 limit on bonuses.
Further deposit limits were proposed by the Minister for Social Security, Ardalan Shekarabi, of SEK4,000, set to come into place in February, however these have been scrapped.
