Super Bowl LVI betting set to break year-on-year record
Nine legalized markets report strong handle and revenue with Nevada and Montana among big early winners

Legalized sports betting markets are on track to smash Super Bowl betting records with initially nine reporting states confirming Super Bowl LVI handle of more than $473.8m on the showpiece event.
Based on accumulated data from states including New Jersey and Pennsylvania, the US sports betting market will exceed the total $486.5m handle and $43m revenue reported by (the then) 17 legal jurisdictions in 2021.
At present, the total state handle and revenue stand at $473.8m and $37.1m respectively, with 21 US states where legalized sportsbooks operate yet to publicly publish their own figures.
Of the states which have reported, Oregon, Montana, and Illinois led the handle percentage increase/decrease figures, closely followed by Nevada, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey.
Nevada and New Jersey saw triple-digit sports handle during Super Bowl LVI, with Pennsylvania and Illinois reporting $68m and $60.5m respectively.
At a revenue level, Montana led the way, with year-on-year Super Bowl revenue skyrocketing from $11,000 in Super Bowl LV revenue to $267,971 in revenue on the Super Bowl LVI game between the Los Angeles Rams and the Cincinnati Bengals.
Taking the silver medal position in year-on-year revenue growth was Illinois with a 24.1% year-on-year revenue uptick to $9.5m, beating Nevada’s sportsbook operators, which reported a 22.6% year-on-year spike to $15.4m.
New York, which has seen a record level of sports betting interest over its debut month of January, will report its figures later this week.
