
Spanish Q2 revenues up 7% as online casino leads growth
Sports betting figures remain flat in Spain's regulated online market, while casino rises 22%


Gross gaming revenue (GGR) from Spain‘s regulated online gambling market increased 6.7% year-on-year during Q2 2019 as total revenues hit €178.3m (£161.8m), according to the latest figures from the regulator.
The DGOJ yesterday revealed sports betting accounted for the largest share of Spanish market revenues during the quarter, with Q2 revenues hitting €86.4m (£78.3m), or 48% of total GGR in the period.
However, betting revenues were down 1% YoY from the figures generated during the same period of 2018, when revenues hit €87.6m.
Online casino revenues accounted for 39% of Spanish GGR during Q2 2019, with revenues hitting €69.4m (£62.9m) during the period and represented a 22% YoY rise on the figures generated during Q2 2018.
Poker revenues, which accounted for just under 11% of Spanish GGR during Q2, fell by just under 1% YoY to €19.3m (£17.5m) in the three months ending 30 June.
Revenues from online bingo declined 7% during the quarter, falling to €3m (£2.7m) during the period and accounting for just under 2% of the total Spanish GGR during Q2.
The biggest rise during Q2 2019 was reported in the competitions segment of the Spanish market, with gross gaming revenues increasing by 37% YoY to €470,106 during the quarter.
The DGOJ attributed this rise to the online poker shared liquidity agreement between the French, Spanish and Portuguese poker markets, which went live in early 2018.
The number of active accounts remained largely flat during Q2 2019, with 861,237 active accounts registered during the period. However, the number of new accounts fell by 12% YoY during the same period 235,920 new registrations.
Marketing spend increased by 1% YoY during Q2 2019, with €82.5m being spent on marketing during the second quarter of 2019.
Within these figures, the biggest increases were in spending on affiliate marketing, which rose by 14% YoY, and sponsorships, which rose by almost 9% during the same period.
