Spain has fourth-lowest rate of gambling addiction globally, study claims
Research carried out by a professor of sociology at Madrid’s Charles III University reveals Australia and UK have more problem gamblers than Spain

Spain has the fourth-lowest rate of gambling addiction globally, according to figures released by the Charles III University of Madrid.
A study carried out by Sociology professor, José Antonio Gómez Yáñez, has reported that 0.5% of the population suffers from gambling addiction.
Figures also revealed problem gambling accounted for 2.5% of the total cases of addiction in the country.
Only Norway, Sweden and Germany have lower rates of gambling addiction, the report says, with France, Australia and the UK ahead of Spain on the list.
The study refers to a 2016/17 statistic that 5,481 people in the country were actively being treated for gambling addiction.
Gómez Yáñez said the trend of problematic gaming was down since 1990 as a result of regulation and “a sign of operators’ responsibilities”.
Elsewhere, the report revealed the gambling industry in Spain has generated 6000 new jobs since 2013, across both retail and online.
