Spain GGR down 24% as sports betting revenue plummets
Annual rises in casino and bingo revenue fail to offset a 57.8% dip in sports betting revenue in Iberian nation

Total gross gaming revenue (GGR) in Spain fell by 24% year-on-year (YoY) in Q4 2021, with a severe downturn in sports betting driving the lower revenue return.
GGR for the final three months of the year amounted to €175.9m (£148.7m) down from the €231.3m posted in Q4 2020.
Breaking down GGR by vertical, a 57.8% YoY fall in sports betting revenue from €103.5m to €43.7m was the main driver of the overall decrease.
Casino represented €107.5m of total GGR, rising 9.9% YoY from Q4 2020’s €97.8m.
Poker was the third largest vertical returning €20.5m in revenue, down 17.6% YoY.
Bingo revenue increased 5.1% to €4.1m, while contests returned just €50,000 after revenue fell by 95.7% YoY.
Total marketing expenditure for the quarter decreased by 38% to €93.7m, largely in part due to the sponsorship restrictions implemented by the Spanish government with sponsorship spend plummeting 86.6% YoY.
Of the €93.7m total spend, €10m was spent on affiliation, €1.3m on sponsorships and €46.8m on promotions.
Advertising spend amounted to €35.6m for the quarter.
The monthly average of active game accounts fell 8.2% YoY to 964,873, while the monthly average of new accounts dropped by 45.5% to 213,587.
There were 78 licensed operators in Spain for the quarter.
