Sky Bet plots cloud migration to manage massive site traffic
Operator sets out long-term strategy for improving scalability and managing higher volumes of traffic

Sky Bet has set out a two-year plan to shift the Skybet.com site onto its AWS-powered containerisation platform, to enable to the site to manage much higher volumes of traffic.
Speaking to EGR, Paul McCormick, director of Bet tech at Sky Betting & Gaming, said the firm would be able to run on its managed data centres on quieter days and shift to the cloud during peak events.
“If you look at most of our free-to-play products, they are all in AWS. Most of our fantasy games are now on AWS, there is probably only one or two that are not,” McCormick said.
Sky Bet first tested its containerisation model on the operator’s trading platform in September.
The operator worked closely with Amazon throughout the process, after the tech giant expressed an interest in the website’s huge volume of traffic.
“We are the biggest operator by volume, albeit not by revenue,” McCormick said.
Elsewhere, Sky Bet in investing heavily in its in-play betting features in an effort to surpass bet365 as the “biggest player in the market”.
McCormick said the operator was working to provide more information on sporting events through the integration of additional Sporting Life content.
Sky Bet also launched its SBTech-powered sportsbook in Germany last week.
