Romania online gambling bill continues progress
European Commission will run rule over framework as bill makes its way through Romania's parliament

A regulated Romanian online gaming framework is inching closer as the country’s remote gaming bill continues its passage through parliament.
The bill was this week passed to the country’s second chamber – the Chamber of Deputies – which will put it under debate in the Chamber of Deputies Finance and Budget commission ahead of a vote.
Should the bill be passed into law, which is expected to tack place by early May, all required provisions will have been met in order to enable authorities to begin the licensing and authorisation process of online operators.
On 9 April the Romanian state notified the European Commission of the implementation norms to the gambling legislation act and the EC now has three months in which to inspect the bill and report any concerns.
A fully regulated and legally complaint online gaming framework has been a long time coming for Romania, with the EC in 2010 having found a previous draft bill to be uncompliant with EU law.
In 2013, eGR reported that the country’s egaming laws were set to be overhauled, leading to the current bill which was adopted by parliament in February this year.
If passed, Romania will offer online licences of 10 years in duration with a tax of 16% on gross gaming revenues.
