
Portuguese online market posts 35.6% uptick in Q3 2021
Online gaming dominates revenue share as football remains the most popular sports betting vertical


Portugal’s online gross gaming revenue grew 35.6% year-on-year (YoY) for Q3 2021 as online gaming streaked ahead of sports betting.
According to the latest data from the Portuguese regulator SRIJ, operators in the market returned a total of €114.2m (£95.5m) in revenue for the reporting period compared to €84.2m in Q3 2020.
Of the €114.2m total, €64.8m was derived from online gaming while €49.3m came from online sports betting.
The €64.8m from online gaming represents a 55.6% YoY increase for the vertical while sports betting grew 16.1% from Q3 2020.
Breaking the sports betting vertical down, football remains the most popular sport in the Iberian nation with a market share of 82.1%.
Tennis was the second most popular sport to bet on during Q3 2021 taking 13.3% of the market while other sports made up the remaining 4.6%.
Despite the positive YoY growth posted by the market, total revenue actually slipped from Q2 2021 to Q3 falling by 8.6% from €124.9m.
There were 162,300 newly registered players in Portugal for Q3 2021 representing an increase both from Q2 2021 (151,900) and Q3 2020 (156,800).
At the conclusion of Q3 2021, there were 100,800 self-excluded players in the country, representing a continued upward curve since the end of September last year when 62,100 players had self-excluded.
Elsewhere, the ISPs of 131 operators were blocked by the regulator during the period, while 48 letters were sent by the SRIJ to illegal operators targeting Portuguese players without a licence.
