Portuguese gaming revenues up 44% in Q1 as both gaming and betting surge
Double-digit rises reported in both major verticals as 888 joins shared liquidity agreement
Portugal’s gross gaming revenues rose by 44% year-on-year during the first quarter of 2019, according to new figures released by the Portuguese regulator SRIJ.
Revenues for Q1 hit €47.3m, up almost €15m from the €32.9m reported during the first quarter of 2018.
In contrast to previous quarters, online gaming revenues rose by the biggest amount, increasing by 45% YoY to €22.6m from a previous Q1 2018 high of €15.5m.
Sports betting revenues continue to rise in Portugal, with Q1 2019 revenues increasing 42.6% YoY to €24.8m from the previous high of €17.4m generated during Q1 2018.
New player sign-ups rose 40% year-on-year to 125,200, while the number of people self-excluding increased by 68% YoY to 35,400 during Q1 2019.
The SRIJ issued 49 letters to illegal operators requiring them to stop offering gambling to Portuguese players without a licence and blocked ISP’s belonging to 30 operators during the first quarter of 2019.
Three additional licences were awarded during the first quarter of 2019, to Luckia, 888 Holdings and Betano.
