Portugal’s online GGR grows 17.2% in Q2 2022
Iberian nation sees a massive 42.2 % jump in online casino revenue which offsets slight drop in sports betting

Portugal’s online gross gaming revenue (GGR) jumped 17.2% year-on-year (YoY) for Q2 2022 as the casino sector saw the biggest leap in the market.
In the latest data published by the country’s regulator, SRIJ, the market returned €146.4m (£123.7m) for the quarter compared to €124.9m in Q2 2021.
Casino GGR soared 42.2% to reach €81.7m in Q2 2022, up from €57.5m in Q2 2021.
Sports betting GGR saw a slight 4.1% decline to €64.7m, which can be attributed to the fact that the delayed Euro 2020 took place partially in Q2 2021.
Football continued to be the dominant sport in Portugal with a 65.8% share of all sports bets in the reporting period.
Tennis ate up some of football’s share with a 20.3% portion while basketball was the third most popular with a 9.3% market share.
While there were positives in the annual results, there were declines compared to Q1 2022.
Overall, GGR fell 7.7% from €158.6m to €146.4m, whilst sports betting GGR dropped 16.8% from €77.7m to €64.7m.
Online casino GGR saw the only quarter-on-quarter increase of 1.1%, from €80.8m to €81.7m.
The decline in market performance was matched by a significant drop in new player registrations in Q2 2022.
There were 165,800 new players in Portugal in Q2 2022, a drop of 23.1% from Q1.
However, there was an increase in the number of self-excluded players rising 7.7% from 118,900 in Q1 2022 to 128,100 in Q2.
Lastly, the SRIJ noted that it had sent 58 notifications for closure during Q2, while the regulator blocked 34 sites in the period.
