
Portugal’s GGR grows 27% YoY to €262m in Q2
Regulator SRIJ reports double-digit growth in both sports betting and igaming verticals, while self-exclusions spike 41.5% YoY

Portugal’s regulator, SRIJ, has reported growth of 27.1% year on year (YoY) in gross gambling revenue (GGR), with the figure reaching €261.8m for Q2 2024.
Sports betting GGR amounted to €103.3m, an increase of 23.1% YoY and a 2.8% rise from the previous quarter.
Players spent €462.3m on sports bets, a 29.3% YoY growth but a 19.5% fall from Q1 2024.
Football continued to be the most popular bet-on sport at 69.3%, with 19.2% of bets placed on Euro 2024.
Portugal’s Primeira Liga and England’s Premier League were next with 7.9% and 6.1%, respectively.
After football, tennis was the second most popular sport at 19.9%, with the Roland-Garros (the French Open) receiving the highest number of bets at 19.9%.
Basketball came in third at 6.8%, with the National Basketball Association (NBA) recording 46.7% of bets.
Casino revenue for the quarter came in at €158.5m, a 29.9% YoY increase. However, the figure had dropped 1.1% from Q1 2024.
Despite this, players bet €4.4bn on online casino during the second quarter, a 34.7% spike YoY, and a 0.4% increase from the previous quarter.
Once again, online slots were the most popular casino games for players in the quarter (82.3% of GGR), while roulette came in second at 6.5% and blackjack in third with 4.9%.
During Q2, 256,900 players self-excluded from online gambling, a 41.5% YoY increase and 8.8% rise from the previous quarter.
There were 38 notifications for closure sent to illegal operators over the period, with 93 sites blocked.
In total, Portugal saw 51.2% YoY growth in new registrations, bringing the total of players to 4.4 million.
There are currently 13 operators licensed to operate online sports betting and 17 operators holding an online casino licence, bringing the total number of licenses in the country to 30.
