Online gaming revenue in New Jersey hits record high during July
Sports betting handle leaps 90% month on month despite shortage of on-field action caused by coronavirus pandemic

New Jersey’s online gaming revenue reached an all-time high of $87.5m in the month of July, according to the latest data released by the NJ Division of Gaming Enforcement.
That figure eclipsed the previous record GGR of $85.9m achieved in May 2020 as the impact of brick-and-mortar casino closures and a slimmed-down sporting schedule drove players to online casino and poker.
In terms of verticals, casino amassed $82.7m in revenue and poker accounted for the remaining share of $4.8m.
Moreover, July’s GGR of $87.5m signalled a 122.5% increase over the $39.3m generated in the corresponding month in 2019.
It means igaming in the Garden State has racked up $510m in revenue in the first seven months of 2020, already surpassing the $482m achieved for the whole of 2019.
Golden Nugget’s license (casino only) once again dominated the market in July with revenue of $31.5m, while the chasing pack was headed by Resorts Digital with $18m and Borgata on $15.3m.
As for sports betting, handle in July was $315.1m, which equated to 90% increase over the $165m recorded in June and $65m more than July 2019 when sport wasn’t interrupted by a pandemic.
Due to a lack of land-based betting options in July, mobile accounted for a whopping 93.9% of sports wagering handle.
Meadowlands, which includes FanDuel and PointsBet, was the clear leader in terms of revenue with $69.9m. Resorts Digital (DraftKings and Fox Bet) was its closest rival with $41.4m.
With MLB, NHL and NBA being played in August, albeit behind closed doors, sports betting handle is set to soar in the month once the next set of data is released by the regulator.
