Massachusetts sports betting draws interest from 29 prospective licensees
Twenty-three mobile sportsbook operators complete scoping survey as licensing process moves forward

The Massachusetts Gaming Commission (MGC) has confirmed interest from 29 mobile operators, racetracks and local casinos in sports betting licenses to operate in the state.
The admission comes after the MGC sent a scoping survey to a number of entities on October 7, a survey which is a necessary prerequisite of a sportsbook operator application.
Of these 29, three came from potential category one (retail casino) sports betting licensees, with a further three coming from potential category two (racetrack) licensees.
These were: Encore Boston Harbor, MGM Springfield and the Plainridge Park Casino, in respect of category 1; while Suffolk Downs, Raynham Park and the Commonwealth Equine and Agricultural Center accounted for the category 2 survey respondents.
In respect of the category three (mobile/online) sportsbook licenses, 23 surveys were returned from prospective operator licensees, with FanDuel, BetMGM, DraftKings and emerging sportsbook operator Fanatics named by the MGC among the list.
Firms were required to provide specific company information as part of the survey ahead of formal application submissions and the evaluation process.
While the survey is a required part of an application, the non-refundable application processing fee of $200,000 is not due until full applications are submitted.
Applicants for sports wagering operator licenses are required to submit a completed sports wagering operator license Application by 2pm Monday November 21, 2022.
The market is expected to launch in 2023, potentially in time for Super Bowl LVII.
