GeoComply: More than one million accounts created in New York since launch
Geolocation data firm reveals newly launched market continues to grow as BetMGM enters the fray

GeoComply data has revealed more than one million sports betting accounts have been created in New York since the market launched last week.
The hotly anticipated launch of sports betting in the Empire State has been met with fervour as 1.2 million accounts have been created across the authorised sportsbooks.
In the period between launching on 8 January through to 17 January, New York saw 878,000 unique active players, more than New Jersey and Pennsylvania combined in the same period.
According to GeoComply, 87.8% of New York sports bettors are brand new to regulated online sports betting, with only 9.3% of New Yorkers having previously placed bets in neighbouring New Jersey.
Fears over cannibalisation of the market have been eased by this fact, as well as data coming out of the Garden State showing an increase in geolocation transactions since the New York market launch.
The appetite for sports betting also shows little sign of slowing down, with geolocation transactions for the second live weekend up to 17.9 million compared to 17.2 million on the launch weekend.
Caesars, FanDuel, DraftKings and Rush Street Interactive’s BetRivers brand will be joined by BetMGM moving forwards as the only authorised online sportsbooks in the state.
Bally Bet, PointsBet, Resorts World, and WynnBET are still awaiting their own respective approvals from the New York State Gaming Commission.
Lindsay Slader, GeoComply MD gaming, said: “The momentum of New York’s sports betting launch has continued and it is mostly homegrown.
“The vast majority of users are brand new to regulated sports betting in the US. The data tell us that New Yorkers are dumping illegal sportsbooks for the new legal options and operators are also excelling at attracting first-time bettors,” she added.
