GamCare launches programme to tackle gambling-related harm in prisons
Charity to partner with Interventions Alliance for new support and therapy network across the criminal justice system

GamCare has partnered with the Interventions Alliance to provide cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) to those suffering from gambling-related harm in the criminal justice system.
The new programme will offer eight sessions of CBT to focus on exploring harmful gambling behaviour, its impact and how to change attitudes to gambling.
Recent studies have shown there is a higher prevalence of gambling-related harm in prisoners compared to the national population.
However, there is currently a distinct lack of support and gambling treatment available for those suffering from harm.
The programme is set to build on previous work by GamCare and other support networks.
Anna Hemmings, GamCare CEO, said: “We are excited to work with Interventions Alliance on this new partnership. It provides a valuable opportunity to build on the work we already do, combining our gambling support with their criminal justice and offending behaviour expertise.
“We hope this new programme will help tackle the stigma and ultimately reduce gambling-related harm in the criminal justice system and, by extension, the community,” she added.
Suki Binning, Interventions Alliance chief social worker, said: “Research on gambling addictions show that those with a gambling addiction are more likely to commit crime, so this intervention is one part of the solution.
“This programme will offer the structured support that those with a gambling addiction desperately need. Our specialists will help participants to recognise their addiction and its impact, including the risks to those around them and themselves,” she added.
