Delaware to be first state to launch full-scale sports betting since PASPA repeal
Launch provides a boost for William Hill, who is the exclusive risk manager for the Delaware Lottery
Delaware will become the first US state to launch single-game sports betting following the repeal of PASPA when the state’s three casinos start taking bets next Tuesday.
The state was one of four allowed to take bets before the repeal, although it was limited to parlay betting.
Following the Supreme Court’s decision, the Delaware Department of Finance and the Attorney General’s Office determined that there are no legal obstacles to expanding to full-scale sports betting.
The state’s three casinos will launch their betting product next Tuesday in the form of SportsPick, provided by the Delaware Lottery.
The odds for the product will be provided by William Hill, through a Scientific Games platform, and will cover baseball, football, hockey, basketball, soccer, golf, and auto racing.
“We’re hopeful that this will bring even more visitors into Delaware to see first-hand what our state has to offer,” said state Governor John Carney.
The Delaware Lottery has also published an online “how-to-bet guide” for its novice customers
“We have worked closely with Delaware’s three casinos to train lottery and casino staff in preparation for a launch of expanded sports betting, and Delaware is prepared to move forward,” said Rick Geisenberger, secretary of the Delaware Department of Finance, which oversees the Delaware Lottery.
“We will continue to provide public updates and additional information through the Delaware Lottery ahead of next week’s launch.”
Several states are vying to be next to go live, with New Jersey lawmakers looking to pass a bill by June 7.
Elsewhere, Pennsylvania said yesterday casino license holders can “begin submission of petitions requesting approval to conduct sports wagering.”
