DCMS begins hunt for new National Lottery Community Fund chair
Government offering £40,000 per year for two days’ work a week as search for permanent successor to Blondel Cluff commences

The Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) has begun the recruitment process for a permanent National Lottery Community Fund chair as the hunt for Blondel Cluff’s permanent successor continues.
The process has been kickstarted as interim chair Paul Sweeney’s contract is due to end in August, after being appointed on a 12-month fixed-term contract last year.
Sweeney was drafted in to replace Cluff when she stepped down from the position in July 2023 after just over two years as chair.
The position, which is listed on the UK government website, includes remuneration of £40,000 for two days of work per week.
The role is also advertised as a four-year long contract as the government looks to tie down a chair to oversee the majority of The National Lottery Community Fund’s overarching strategy through to 2030.
The new strategy, which has a focus on children’s services and the environment, will see grants worth up to £20,000 and long-term partnership investments rolled out as part of the scheme.
The job listing confirms applications are open until 7 February 2024 with interviews expected to be concluded by 17 April.
The successful applicant must possess an understanding of the charity and community sectors and have a track record of strategic leadership in civil society, public service or business.
The candidate must also have a proven board-level record, demonstrating an ability to lead a non-executive board.
The job listing reads: “The new chair will join the Fund at an exciting time, following the launch of the ‘It starts with community’ strategy.
“It sets an ambition to make a bigger difference through four community-led missions, new ways of working and values that will guide all of what the Fund does.
“This is an incredible opportunity to chair a high-profile UK public body that places social connections and community activities at the heart of creating healthier, happier lives and a flourishing society.”
