Danish GGR rises 20.8% in Q1 2022 as land-based operations come to the fore
Online casino and sports betting sectors dip slightly as land-based slot machines and casinos return with aplomb

The Danish gambling market has returned a 20.8% year-on-year (YoY) increase in gross gaming revenue (GGR) for Q1 2022.
The total market GGR jumped from DKK1.3bn in Q1 2021 to DKK1.6bn in the first three months of 2022 as the land-based sector returned to bolster the jurisdiction’s total revenue.
Breaking down total GGR by segment, online casino leapfrogged sports betting to become the largest revenue-returning sector in the market, despite a YoY downturn.
Online casino GGR dipped 2.5% YoY from DKK720m in Q1 2021 to DKK702m in Q1 2022.
Online slots represented the lion’s share of the DKK702m GGR at 77.3%, while roulette (7.7%) and blackjack (7.3%) took the other two podium places.
Sports betting GGR also decreased from Q1 2021 to Q1 2022, falling by 3.7% from DKK589m to DKK567m.
The majority of the sports bets were placed via mobile (59.2%), with the remainder made up in retail settings (27.5%) and via desktop (13.3%).
Despite the decreases across online casino and sports betting, Denmark’s land-based operations came roaring back from a standing start, with Covid-19 restrictions in Q1 2021 bringing about closures.
Land-based slot machines returned DKK241m in GGR compared to the DKK0 in Q1 2021, but quarter-on-quarter GGR for the sector has slipped.
In Q3 2021, land-based slot machines returned DKK333m and in Q4 2021 DKK286m.
Elsewhere, land-based casinos returned DKK65m in GGR, although this slipped from Q3 2021 (DKK98m) and Q3 2021 (DKK84m).
Additionally, by the end of March 2022, 32,400 Danes had registered with the country’s self-exclusion scheme ROFUS, of which 75.7% were male and the remainder female.
