
Danish gambling revenue stoops 33% in Q2 2020
Online revenue increases 6% as coronavirus pandemic impacts Nordic market’s offline operations


Danish online gambling revenue rose 6% year-on-year to DKK673m (£81.5m) during Q2 2020, according to the latest figures released by the Danish Gambling Authority (DGA).
Total gross gambling revenue across Denmark’s four main gambling markets slumped by 33% during Q2 2020 to DKK1,161m (£140.8m) from a previous 2019 high of DKK1,728m.
The biggest fall during the period was in the land-based casino vertical, where revenue decreased dramatically by 82% from DKK94m in 2019 to just DKK16m (£1.9m) this year.
This drop was mirrored in Danish slots revenue, which shrunk by 72% from DKK365m in Q2 2019 to a low of DKK99m in the same period of 2020.
Sports betting, which was significantly impacted by the coronavirus pandemic, also suffered a decline in Q2 2020 as revenue dropped 41% to DKK373m (£45.2m).
Over the quarter, 47% of sports bets were placed via mobile phone, with 36% of bets being placed using a desktop computer. Bets placed via retail bookies accounted for just 16% in the period.
In respect of online casino, 54% of transactions were made via mobile phone, with 46% taking place via desktop PC.
A total of 23,469 individuals were registered with the DGA’s ROFUS self-exclusion scheme during Q2 as 15,980 people chose to self-exclude from gambling permanently. A further 7,489 individuals chose to self-exclude on a temporary basis from all Danish-licensed sites.
The DGA’s ‘Stop Spillet’ helpline to support players with potential gambling addictions and troubling behaviours received 965 calls in Q2 concerning self-exclusion.
