
Colorado betting handle for July surges 206% year on year
Table tennis continues to defy the odds as the $8.6m wagered on it outstrips golf, MMA, and athletics

Sports betting handle in Colorado leapt 206% year on year during July to $181.3m, according to the latest statistics from the Colorado Division of Gaming.
This was a 21% decrease over June and the lowest total in 2021, although July tends to be one of the quietest months on the calendar in terms of sport.
Total GGR was $15.7m, while net sports betting proceeds amounted to $9.6m. This gave a hold of 8.6%.
Meanwhile, total taxes collected from sports betting during the month was $999,110.63.
Mobile betting with the state’s 25 digital sportsbooks accounted for a whopping 99% of betting handle, with just 1% staked in the state’s 17 operational retail locations.
In terms of the most popular sports, baseball clearly led the way with $61.1m in handle, or 33.7% of the total action, followed by basketball on $27.2m (15%).
Soccer and tennis attracted $14m and $12m in stakes respectively, while table tennis was in fifth spot with $8.6m of handle.
After the cancelation of major sport last year due to Covid-19, table tennis was able to fill the void and it seems Coloradans still can’t get enough of the obscure sport.
After MMA on $4.4m, a total of $2.8m was bet on athletics, which would have been almost exclusively down to the Olympic Games in Tokyo.
Parlay/combination bets generated handle of $30.7m, which was 17% of the total staked.
Unlike many other regulators, Colorado Division of Gaming doesn’t break down the figures to reveal how each operator performed.
August is expected to be another quiet month before September’s new NFL season and what could be the busiest month since sports betting launched in Colorado in May 2020.
