Betway shutters operations in Kenya
Macroeconomic environment bites as new customer registrations blocked but online operator to remain in other African markets

Betway has closed its operations in Kenya with immediate effect as the macroeconomic environment continues to bite the industry.
The Super Group-owned operator confirmed it had ceased operating in the East African market on 16 May.
In a notice sent to affiliate partners, and seen by EGR, Betway confirmed no deposits will be taken and all customer registrations have been closed.
Additionally, customers will no longer be able to place bets and will only have access to view their balances and request cashouts.
In the same notice, Betway informed its partners to stop their Kenyan traffic and focus efforts and budget elsewhere.
EGR understands that Betway will remain in Ghana, Nigeria and South Africa, and that the firm’s exit from Kenya is due to cost-cutting measures amid the difficult economic environment.
According to Super Group’s Q4 financial results, revenue from Africa increased year on year to take a 22% share of total revenue compared to 19% in Q4 2021.
In fact, the group cited strong growth on the continent, along with Canada (excluding Ontario) for a 5% uptick in sports betting revenue to €113m during the reporting period.
