Betfred takes majority share in South African operator LottoStar
UK bookmaker expands footprint in South Africa with third major deal following Betting World and Sepels Sportsbet takeovers

Betfred has taken a majority shareholding in South African operator LottoStar as the bookmaker continues to expand its presence in the country.
The undisclosed deal will see Betfred launch a new partnership with LottoStar in the country.
Established in 2014, LottoStar offers fixed-odds betting and live casino content via its proprietary online platform.
The brand has grown rapidly in popularity due to several high-profile marketing campaigns and strong corporate social responsibility initiatives.
Betfred currently operators 53 retail shops in the country, as well as an online business following the acquisitions of Betting World and Sepels Sportsbet.
Betfred agreed a £6.1m deal to acquire Betting World from bankrupt racetrack operator Phumelela Gaming and Leisure in June 2021.
This latest partnership in South Africa represents another step on Betfred’s global expansion roadmap.
In March, the firm’s US division expanded into Arizona via its mobile sports betting app, while in September 2021, it partnered with NFL sports betting media outlet The Game Day to sponsor two of its flagship shows.
Joanne Whittaker, Betfred CEO, said: “We are delighted to partner with such a fast-growing company in South Africa, the business will not only complement our activity in South Africa but our international businesses in the US and Europe.”
Tasoulla Hadjigeorgiou, LottoStar CEO, added: “We are confident that this partnership will broaden our offering and provide our customers with the highest quality services.
“Our partnership also paves the way for greater collaboration and expansion, and we are excited to grow our family.”
