BetEasy files case against Sportsbet to rename its brand
Stars Group-owned brand files ruling to ban Paddy Power’s Sportsbet brand

The Stars Group-owned Australian-brand BetEasy, formerly CrownBet, has launched a legal battle to get Paddy Power Betfair to rename its Sportsbet brand.
The legal action follows a case earlier this year where Sportsbet filed a suit to stop CrownBet rebranding to Sportingbet as the names were too similar.
CrownBet instead settled on BetEasy, and has now filed a counter claim in Australia’s Federal Court, saying the Sportsbet name should also be banned.
BetEasy argues that various sports betting service providers other than Sportsbet have the words ‘sport’ and ‘bet’ in their name, and if their two names were too similar, Sportsbet should never have been granted a trademark in the first place.
“The registration of each of the Sportsbet trade marks is [therefore] liable to be cancelled,” the document claimed.
The Stars Group acquired Crown Resort’s 62% stake in CrownBet in February and renamed the brand BetEasy.
Sportsbet has denied that its trademark should be liable to be cancelled.
