Oddschecker Insights: World Cup sees significant dip in deposit value as bookies enjoy group stages
Bet365 continues clickshare dominance as tier-two BetUK and Midnite make significant strides with acquisition offers

The average deposit value for punters at the World Cup has fallen 23% compared to last summer’s Euro 2020 tournament, according to the last data from Oddschecker.
The affiliate giant noted the decrease could point to the impact of the growing cost-of-living crisis in the UK, coupled with affordability measures being put in place ahead of the upcoming white paper.
Additionally, the overall value of deposits has decreased by 12% versus Euro 2020, despite the number of deposits actually increasing by 14%.
However, although deposit values are down, the bookmakers will be positive after the tournament’s group stage and its encompassing 48 matches.
Although the favourite win-rate of 54% is not too far off the long-term average for the Premier League (56%), a set of shock results including Saudi Arabia’s win over Argentina and series of bore draws left the bookies happy early on.
Additionally, only one of the twelve group stage matchdays saw four out of four favourites win, saving operators from big acca pay-outs on a regular basis.
In another positive for the operators, the group stage contributed to November returning the highest Oddschecker-implied industry margin since January.
The reporting period saw a 7.9% net margin, considerably higher than the 1.1% margin during Euro 2020.
Looking at best priced bookies, Oddschecker puts Sporting Index ahead of bet365 and Betfair Sportsbook with an overround of 105.4%
Elsewhere, in terms of World Cup clickshare on the Oddschecker grid, Unibet, BetUK and Midnite all performed well, turning offers into registrations ahead of the rest.
Unibet saw its bet-flip clickshare improve by 4.3pp among football bettors since the start of the World Cup, making it the top performing brand by this metric.
BetUK’s ‘Bet £19 Get £66 in Free Bets’ offer and Midnite’s ‘Bet £20 Get £60 in Free Bets Credits’ saw the tier-two firms launch first and second place in Oddschecker’s top acquisition offers.
Betfred’s ‘Bet £10 Get £60 in Free Bets’ saw the Warrington-based bookie take the final podium place in these rankings.
Elsewhere, bet365 continues to dominate the clickshare rankings after storming ahead of nearest challengers William Hill and Sky Bet.
