Optimove iGaming Pulse Report July 2024: Germany retains 50% of new players
In this month's column, Optimove explores how sports bettors and casino players have stuck around following two major summer football tournaments

Peak sporting events offer a prime opportunity for operators to attract new players and bring back those who have gone dormant. During events like Euro 2024, there’s an initial surge of new players who join in for the thrill of placing a bet and enhancing their experience.
However, the real challenge for operators lies in retaining these casual players – a task that’s far from simple.
New players tend to churn quickly after the excitement of a peak event fades, with Optimove Insights data showing that they have a 25% lower retention rate compared to active players – a metric we refer to as ‘new retention rate’.
Germany currently leads the EU with a 50% new retention rate, meaning that for every two new players who joined during June 2024, one has placed at least one more bet in July.
With Euro 2024 and Copa América 2024 still played in July, it will be interesting to monitor how this metric evolves during August. Successfully retaining even a portion of these new players can significantly enhance an operator’s growth potential and maximise ROI.
