Malta Gaming Authority names industry newcomer as new CEO
Charles Mizzi will succeed the outgoing Dr Carl Brincat on 26 January 2024 following a two-month long selection process

The Malta Gaming Authority (MGA) has named Charles Mizzi as its new CEO following a selection process that began on 30 October.
Mizzi will replace the outgoing Dr Carl Brincat who elected not to renew his contract which is set to expire on 25 January 2024.
The regulator said Mizzi will shadow Brincat over the next month to ensure a smooth change of leadership.
Mizzi joins the MGA after a five-year stint as the CEO of the governmental body Residency Malta Agency, which manages and promotes three residency programmes in Malta for non-EU nationals.
He also held several senior roles at a number of companies in the events industry. Mizzi also spent time in the finance sector in the early stages of his career.
On his new role, Mizzi commented: “I am honoured to have been given the opportunity to lead the Authority.
“I am keen to build on past successes and, together with the team under the guidance of the Minister responsible and the board of governors, to strategically steer the Authority forward so that Malta’s already robust position in the field may be further strengthened while delivering value to all stakeholders.”
Brincat has been the MGA’s CEO since January 2021, initially joining the regulator as a legal advisor in September 2014.
He was appointed senior legal advisor in November 2015 and then deputy general counsel in November 2017, before being promoted to chief legal counsel in January 2019.
Brincat was then given the role of chief legal and enforcement officer in October 2019, before taking the reins as CEO in 2021.
Silvio Schembri, Minister for the economy, EU funds and lands in Malta, thanked Brincat for his work over the last three years while welcoming Mizzi to the role.
Schembri said: “With his vast experience in managing the operations of a number of entities and his contributions towards major projects, Charles Mizzi is undoubtedly the right candidate to continue building on what the MGA has achieved so far, and lead his excellent colleagues within the authority towards further future success.”
