GeoComply data reveals record opening NFL betting week
Latest data shows a 56% increase in geolocation volumes over the opening week of the NFL season

GeoComply has revealed data showing 242.3 million geolocation transactions were recorded during the NFL season’s opening week, representing a 56% increase on 2022’s figures.
The data was collected over the course of a week from 3 September to 10 September.
In the first week of the NFL season, there were 1.1 million new player accounts opened that were tracked by GeoComply, representing an increase of 40% on last year’s figures.
Over the week, the cybersecurity solutions provider analysed statistics on the newly regulated states of Maryland, Massachusetts and Ohio.
Ohio was the most active new state, with 19.4 million total transactions and 133,000 new accounts created. GeoComply also found that there were 854,000 active player accounts over the week in the Buckeye State.
Maryland saw 12.7 million total transactions among 388,000 active accounts. The Old Line State also saw 61,000 new accounts created.
Lastly, Massachusetts reported that 59,000 new accounts were created, with 383,000 active over the course of the week. The Bay State had 9.2 million total transactions during the first matchday.
The data showed that 97% of transactions were made via a mobile device, with 75% of those transactions coming from iOS devices.
GeoComply also noted that there were 4,200 transactions per second immediately after the first touchdown in the opening game between the Detroit Lions and Kansas City Chiefs.
Additionally, GeoComply found that there was significant demand in six unregulated states that are preparing to consider bills to legalise sports betting next year, with Missouri topping the list with 553,000 geolocation checks while estimated annual taxes lost are $59m (£47.2m).
“GeoComply calculates the latter figure by taking the population size of the state, estimated gross gaming revenue and a tax rate of 15%.
The total number of checks recorded in unregulated states topped 1 million, and GeoComply calculated that there could be annual tax losses of $320.5m.
On the data gathered, Anna Sainsbury, co-founder and CEO of GeoComply, commented: “While the increase in our transaction volume emphasises the appetite for regulated online sports betting, our data also accentuates an urgent call to action.
“States without regulated online sports betting should get off the legalisation sidelines and unlock their ability to protect consumers and generate significant tax revenue.”
