Weekend Review: Canelo/GGG draw saves bookies after Capri racing pay-out
Layers thrilled with draws in boxing and football after paying out on Capri and Lewis Hamilton
It was an excellent Saturday for racing punters after the favourite Capri won in the final classic of the British racing season, storming home in the St Leger race at Doncaster.
The terrible result for the layers was one of William Hill’s five worst in horseracing this year, while Carpi was also the most backed horse of the day with Ladbrokes customers.
BetVictor’s Charlie McCann said: “The win for favourite Capri in the final classic of the season made sure Saturday was a blinding day for racing punters with the Aidan O’Brien/Ryan Moore combination always popular.”
The bookies did manage to claw back some money during the big boxing match between Canelo Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin, which ended in a draw.
“The draw in the fight between Golovkin and Canelo on Saturday was a cracking result thanks to Judge Adalaide Byrd, who fortunately watched a different fight to the rest of the world,” said McCann.
The bookies also lost out when Lewis Hamilton defied the odds to win the Singapore Grand Prix after Ferrari were undone by a crash, costing Betway a negative margin.
Bet365’s Steve Freeth said: “It wasn’t just Lewis Hamilton who profited from the first corner carnage- his backers were also celebrating with the Brit touching 20/1 on Saturday and being half that price on race day.”
It was a bookmaker friendly weekend in the football, after most operators lost heavily in the midweek round of Champions League matches that were dominated by the favourites.
Arsenal and Chelsea ended in a goalless draw, as did Tottenham at home to Swansea, while Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool failed to beat Burnley at home.
Betway’s Alan Alger said: “Bookmakers have the Liverpool scarves out again as we can always rely on them to throw in a number of odds-on stinkers in the league across a season to kill off accumulators.
“Tottenham staying at Wembley for a season might also be a good thing for us.”
